It was a beautiful day. Sunshine spilled down from the sky in the last few summer days that remained. She knew that fall would come and the brisk air would lead to winter and she’d be stuck mainly indoors. Not because she disliked the snow or anything, she rather liked it since it was just so beautiful. Everything looked so clean and white when it snowed though she tended to get very sick when it got too cold so she spent most of her time inside.
Now wasn’t a time to be inside though, now was a time to be free and happy. Running through the grounds like a launched cannonball she breathed in the fresh warm air. Smiling, she closed her eyes and felt the wind blow against her face and blow her hair back out of her face.
Sadako’s mother, her first mother, told her that she learned to run before she could do anything else. Before she spoke, before she walked, crawled, or did anything she ran. She’d always been a runner and enjoyed how it felt. The free feeling that she got—it was almost euphoric as though she were flying. Sadako had always wanted to fly, not in a plane but just spread her arms out one day and be able to take off from the ground. How wonderful would that be? Sadako didn’t know what that would be like or if such a thing could ever happen but if she could come back from the dead who knew what else was possible? Sadako wasn’t sure but she knew that she wouldn’t try to jump off a cliff any time soon.
Glancing up at the sky she stared up at it, it was a clear day, one of the last days of summer before the autumn came and made all the trees lose all their trees. Her dark hair blew in the wind and she tilted her head up gently to watch the clouds roll by. It didn’t look like it would rain any time soon but she couldn’t be too certain. If it did rain she’d go inside as fast as her little feet could carry her. Bouncing forward she listened to her feet pound gently on the grass. She tilted her head to the side and she smiled gently as she closed her eyes gently. It was a good day. She didn’t know what else to possibly think aside from it was a good day.
She remembered being in the hospital and watching the good days from a distance. Never being able to go outside and feel the sun on her skin. She was loving it, she had survived after her death date and was going to do as much as she could. There was no way she would let her life pass by again. She’d come to grips with the fact she was mortal and who knew if she would ever come back again. Maybe, she would have a soul that rested in peace if she lived the life she was meant to live or she’d continuously come back for more. She couldn’t be too certain, she wasn’t certain of anything anymore.
Miss Yoshida stopped running and she slowed her movements to a jog then a walk. She made it to the fence and Sadako picked up a stick as she moved it against the chain link fence. Should she go out? Sadako stopped and one of her dollish hands wrapped around the fence as she thought about climbing over.
Humming to herself she brushed her dark hair back out of her eyes. She wanted to live. She wanted to live her life to the fullest. She wanted to run, jump, and be outside. She wanted to do everything she didn’t get to do the first time around. In truth, she should have been making cranes but she had found the sunshine far more inviting. Should she climb over? There was obviously a fence there for a reason! Maybe, she should stay on the school’s side.
Taking a step away from the fence she tossed her stick down and placed both of her hands behind her neck. Moving forward she smiled gently maybe she’d save that for another day when she wasn’t completely alone. Going into the creepy forest didn’t seem like a great idea when she was all alone and could possibly get lost.
She’d never gotten lost in Shibuya before. There were always landmarks and she knew where she was going for the most part. North Carolina was different she seemed to get lost quite often and she seemed to have lost all sense of direction. Though, she supposed she wouldn’t get lost so long as she kept her eye on the school. Heading back towards it she glanced back over to the fence once more before she moved farther away from it.
