Normally, a group project would scare Harold deeply. But this time, something had been different. A boy that Harold was drawn to; not like he was drawn to Alice, but in a curious way. Even by Harold's standards, Cody had been a step back from the norm, and also being a step back from the norm, it had drawn Harold in.He was handed the rubric on the project, but he hadn't paid that much attention. It was something on electrical engineering. Deep theory, and math-y. Stuff the savant found easy to do. That helped his confidence some, but really, Harold had acted out of pure curiosity when he went up to Cody, and stuttered out the question that, for him, was generally world-shaking: want to work with me?
And Cody agreed, and now Harold found himself in one of strangest experiments he was going to do. He had legos, and he was going to destroy them. That was just how much companionship the two had fostered in a couple days. Harold was going to let his legos get hit by lightning, or really, electricity from a tesla coil. He'd done a lot of the math, Cody had done a lot of the building. Sure, this wasn't the in the instructions in their report, but it was companionship, and it was fun. The brown eyes senior actually looked forwards to the walk in the night to the furthest and most obscure part of the grounds, behind some hills and near the chain-link fence that marked the border between the boarding school and the big bad world...on in their case, open countryside. The sky was dark and almost stormy, but Harold had come prepared. A threadbare brown jacket was over his shoulders, but he had a fairly heavy long sleeved shirt on, and he was wearing his best pair of runners, which were not worn out, amazingly. Yes, Harold was ready for the weather, not more importantly, he had legos in his backpack, a notebook and pencil, and batteries and a spare flashlight - the other one he had was in his hand, lighting the way to the coils and his new friend. At least, he hoped Cody was a friend. He'd like to think he was not breaking lots and lots and lots of school rules for another one of those sorts who just left him for nothing, like had happened countless times before. While that sort of thing seemed not to affect him, it did. Inside, regardless of whether or not it showed on the inside, it did, and he never knew exactly why people did all that stupid stuff to him. He got confused, yes, but that was no reason to take advantage of him...right? Apparently not.
Harold reached the flat point between some hills where the coils were. They were big, but not big enough to be seen over the crest of the hill they had chosen, nor could they be seen working, which was good. Harold sat down, then flopped onto his back, trying to count the stairs as he waited for Cody's arrival.
