Mirabelle loved dances. She loved Christmas. It was a perfect combination, the Christmas Ball. It had given her yet another excuse to spend lots of unnecessary money on herself and doll herself up just to go out, have fun, and have people stare at her all night on top of it. Yes, half of her dressing up was so that she could be guaranteed that people would look at her, and she knew they would. Hell, Mira could walk around in rags and people would still stare at her. She knew she was gorgeous, she knew she could get any boy that she wanted. Except for the one that she really wanted, of course, but it wasn’t like she was going to admit that one to herself. She wanted nothing to do with him. Buying the doll for his sister, that was different. That had nothing to do with him; that was just for the little girl. Well, okay, maybe it had a little to do with him, because there were certainly lots of other little girls out there who wanted for Christmas what they couldn’t get, and she’d chosen Hailey, Wes’s younger sister. Coincidence? Possibly.
Believe it or not, Mira really wasn’t that heartless during Christmas time. Maybe she didn’t go around ringing bells for the Salvation Army every weekend, but she really did give to those less needy. She had a lot of money that she didn’t need, and she knew what it was like to want. Yeah, the money wasn’t really hers, it came from her dad, but he never paid attention to where the money was going. He couldn’t honestly mind if he did, right? Helping little kids in orphanages and foster care? It was really the only charity that Mirabelle had ever deemed worthy of her time. She wanted every little boy and girl to have a good Christmas like they all deserved, and they couldn’t do that without a little help. So in all honesty, even if Wes did have a little to do with it, she would have helped a little girl like Hailey get what she really wanted for Christmas anyway. That was just the sort of person she was. She knew what it was like to have empty Christmases, she remembered them. No kid deserved a holiday like that.
It wasn’t like Mirabelle had issues with that anymore; no, her Christmases were filled with clothes and gift cards and shoes and more of everything she already had and didn’t need more of, but certainly wouldn’t complain about. No, she loved both the giving and the getting side of Christmas, too. She loved her lush life. She loved having it all and only getting more every way she turned. Was she spoiled? Certainly. Just look at her outfit for the Christmas Ball tonight. Her necklace alone cost more than the average two years of a public college education. She didn’t really care that she was here alone, for someone was bound to come up and talk to her. Was she self-centered? Certainly. But she knew from experience that this was how the night would go. There was certainly more than one guy in this room who would love to bring her home tonight. Would one of them be so lucky? Who knew. It was possible. Mira slowly surveyed the room and the meager decorations (only one such as Mirabelle could call the beautiful gym directions ‘measly’) as she headed over towards the punch table. Yeah, judging by the amount of the boys in this room, tonight would be fun.
