YOU AND I ARE YOUNG what makes it wrong for us to fall in love? When someone met Carter, it didn’t take long for him or her to realize just how stubborn he was. When he wanted something, he didn’t deal well with anyone trying to persuade him or tell him otherwise. It was the way he wanted it, and it was going to stay that way, dammit. As such, that really went to show just how much he loved Natalia Anne Kruske. Only she could have convinced him that marriage wasn’t so bad, and in fact, almost a good thing. For years he had been completely averse to the entire concept of matrimony; it wasn’t for him, and it was going to stay that way. But Bonnie had changed that. Carter knew deep in his heart that anything that Talia wanted, no matter what it was, she’d get him to do it for her, usually with not that much effort on her part. This one, however, had required a little more out of her. That didn’t mean that she wasn’t persistent about it, though, and now, though she didn’t know it, Clyde was going to ask Bonnie to marry him.
He couldn’t believe this moment had finally arrived. He’d tried to distract her from the whole idea, try to get her to see that marriage wasn’t important when they had each other anyway. But her logic had worked on him; if they were going to be together for the rest of their lives, then why did it matter whether she had a ring on her finger or not? It wasn’t going to make much of a difference, other than make Talia more his than she already was. She might as well be able to be happy too, not just Carter.
And so, he was marrying her. He was going to make up for everything he’d ever done to her in the past, including drunkenly crashing into her car and leading her into a coma, of which she barely made it out. Yeah, he’d definitely done more than his fair share of damage to the one woman he loved. He really hoped this would help to make up for it. Hell, Bonnie probably didn’t have any hard feelings about him and everything he’d done at all, but Carter still felt guilty, beyond guilty, inside. He knew he had to try to make it up to her somehow, and marriage was the only way he could think of. Not that huge of a sacrifice on his part, he’d finally realized. They would still be together forever, just more legitly this way. The only thing that would be different would be Talia’s last name. Honestly, he didn’t really mind that, either. Last names were never something that was of particular importance to him in this life. If it was up to Carter, he’d have her name changed to Natalia Barrow, and he’d change his own too.
Carter still thought about the old days a lot. What if they’d lived longer in their past lives? Would he finally have asked her to marry him back then? He had been only twenty-five when he died, after all, and she just twenty-three. They had been so young, with their entire lives in front of them. Marriage could have been an option, quite a likely one actually, if Bonnie had had enough time to persuade him, like she already had in this lifetime. Then she really could have been Mrs. Bonnie Barrow. It had a much better ring to it, in Carter’s opinion, than did Mrs. Natalia Randolph. But it was too late for any of that.
He’d finally found the right ring, he’d finally found the right night. Well, maybe not the perfect ring, but it was the best one that he could find in his budget. Carter hadn’t stolen Talia’s ring; he’d worked a long time to save up the money for it, and it still didn’t feel like good enough for her. By dropping the $400 on the ring that he had, it was going to be difficult for him to be able to save up enough for a good, if not better, wedding ring when the time finally came around. Come to think of it, how long did Talia want to wait before getting married? Hopefully it wasn’t too soon, because he had to save. Even Carter wasn’t the sort of person who wanted to steal for his wedding. Well, if they were still short on cash later, he supposed he wouldn’t mind robbing a little of it. Or however much it took to get the wedding that Talia wanted.
He really wanted the best for her. He wanted her to be happy. He wanted her to have the best life that she could, especially because it had been cut so short the last time. It didn’t seem fair, it still didn’t, what had happened to them. And Carter still brooded over the fact rather frequently. Tonight was not one of those nights, however. No, tonight was the night that he was going to ask Natalia Kruske to marry him. It was a special night, a night like none other. Carter walked slowly towards the bonfire with her, in no hurry. She was down to just one crutch now, and a knee brace. Every time he looked over and saw the crutch, his heart ached. He still didn’t know how to fully make up for that. “His worst fuck up” couldn’t even begin to describe that night. Carter gave her a smile anyway, though, his left hand slipping into his pocket and fingering the small velvet box. He shouldn’t have been worried about whether or not she’d say yes; he should know she loved him, that marriage was what she wanted anyway, but it was still nerve-wracking. “How long do you wanna stay tonight?” he asked her. The bonfire wasn’t exactly up his alley; he sort of just thought it’d be a good atmosphere to lead up to the big moment.

“How long do you wanna stay tonight?”
Natalia shrugged and looked over her shoulder at Carter and shrugged. "Dunno," She said simply, "Until I get bored, I guess." But she probably wouldn't for a while. After the crash, Talia didn't do as much meandering as she used to. Now, she was down to one crutch and a knee brace. She wanted to go anywhere and everywhere. She'd missed seeing other people. She'd missed talking to them. She'd missed being outside. She missed the freedom of mobility without having to rely on someone to carry her or help her somewhere.
While near death moments suck, you can learn so much from them. And learn she did. She learned how many things in her life she took for granted. She...took everything she had for granted. She didn't realize how much she needed something as little and simple as walking until she lost it in the accident. When she temporarily lost her ability to walk, Talia needed her friends. When her friends came to her, even when she wasn't always nice to them, she realized she had taken her friends for granted as well.
But, she had taken Carter for granted the most. Not everyone automatically knows who their soul mate is. Most people don't actually meet their soulmate. But she had met hers back in the 1930s and their love lasted through the decades to 2010. They were meant to be automatically and she had taken it for granted. When they had broken up, she figured it'd only be a matter of time before he came back to her. But...he didn't come back as quickly as she thought he would. In fact, he didn't come back at all. They were both far too stubborn to give in. In their breakup, Bonnie Parker felt something she'd never felt before. Loneliness. An empty, painful feeling that came when Carter wasn't there and wasn't going to ever come back. She felt it everyday. She would feel it when Isa wasn't by her. She would feel it if she saw something that reminded her of him. She would feel it if she saw him in the hall. She would feel it before she went to bed every night. She had no idea how much she was grateful for and how much she loved Carter until he was no longer there. And now that he was back, she no longer had a reason to cry and she would never let him go again. They were made for each other. They would walk each life together somehow. Because, without each other, there was no life. Bonnie could not survive without Clyde and Clyde could not live without Bonnie. They were merely shells of people when they were apart. But together? Together, she and Carter were one. They were one life. One person, at times, too. They were inseparable.
Inseparable. Talia wanted to ensure they would remain as such forever. In her past life, she was trying to get Clyde of marry her and settle down with her. He refused, though. He was too wild of a man. In this life, she still yearned for marriage. However, after the accident, she didn't want to force him to do anything, lest she pick another fight with him. She wanted marriage, but if he wanted to wait forever, she would too.
If she knew what was in his pocket right now, she would, no doubt, squee with utter joy. Mrs. Bonnie Barrow. Mrs. Natalia Randolph. Both had a lovely ring. She would be his blushing bride, clad head to toe in white carrying a big bouquet of flowers with Isa as her maid of honor.
She limped closer to the fire and carefully sat down, staring into the flames. She took a deep breath, inhaling the scent of the air...the scent of freedom. She looked up at Carter with a smile. "It feels so good to be out and about again," She admitted to him with a big grin.

YOU AND I ARE YOUNG what makes it wrong for us to fall in love? Carter wasn’t typically the kind of person who believed in retribution for one’s own actions. When it’s meant in the sense of revenge, hell, well then that was a completely different story. However, if it was Carter who had made the mistake, Carter who had screwed up, he wasn’t going to put forth any effort at all to fix it or make things better. That was left to the person he’d fucked over. There was only one person in this entire world, it seemed, who was above this unspoken rule, and that was Natalia. Carter felt completely and utterly horrible for not just the accident, but for everything that he had ever done to her in the past. He truly and honestly felt like there was no way for him to make up for everything he’d done. Not even the ring in his pocket would be sufficient payback for all of the pain he’d caused her. It would have to help, though, right? She’d be so happy... That thought brought a small smile to Carter’s face as he watched carefully as Talia sat down, then took a seat next to her, reflexively wrapping an arm around her. He never thought about those things, his body just automatically did them.
His eyes gazed into the fire for a minute, imagining the moment when he asked her. How was he going to do this? He couldn’t ask her here, in front of all these people. That would be so impersonal. If he asked her to come back with him by the trees, apart from everyone, hah, she’d probably think he just wanted sex. Actually, that wasn’t such a horrible idea. It would amuse him. She’d roll her eyes and trudge after him and then he’d surprise her with the ring. Her eyes would light up and she’d beam, oh God her beautiful smile, and then he would take her hand. Carter would very carefully slip the ring onto her finger. He’d stand up and she’d fly into his arms. He’d hug her, he’d swing her around, and it would be the happiest moment of her life. Carter wasn’t so anti-marriage, either. It had taken a long time, but he was no longer averse to it, and honestly, if it made Talia happy, then it made him happy. It was true, how a woman determined almost every aspect of a relationship, the mood included. Women made the real decisions. Men typically ended up just being there to cater to the women’s whims, and to hold them when they wanted to cuddle. Not that Carter minded cuddling so much anymore, to be honest. He’d just missed his Bonnie so damn much that he’d do whatever the hell she wanted. She could take advantage of that and right now, he wouldn’t even care.
He really just wanted to make her happy. He wanted to be there for her. He wanted to, finally, be a constant in her life. He wasn’t going to leave her again, he wasn’t going to ever lose her. Bonnie could call the shots, but this was one area where he would put his foot down, and honestly he didn’t think that she would mind. No matter how much pain she was in after the accident, no matter how pissed she was about not being able to walk before, and finally almost to the point of being able to again, she seemed happy. She seemed happy to be with him again. Carter couldn’t understand how he hadn’t fully believed everyone when they told him she missed her, when they told him she wanted him back, too. And now, that just made him feel like more of an ass. Either way, she was happy now. And he was so fucking beyond that. And in a couple hours, they’d be engaged. Carter looked over at her as she talked, and a smile crossed his face. “Yeah,” he answered. “I’d imagine..” He gently rubbed her arm, giving her a soft kiss on the cheek. God, he wanted to ask her already. “You want a marshmallow or something? Or I brought gummy bears and starburst... I can roast ‘em for you.” Roasting starburst for someone, that was true love.

It made sense, did it not? They were meant to be together forever, hand in hand, ready to face their fate and the end of time together. It was only natural they were wed. Or so Bonnie thought. It was her not-so-humble opinion that she and Clyde MUST get married. She wanted marriage. She felt it made them...well...more official. A little more set in stone. Of course divorce was possible, but let's be realistic. They had their differences, but nothing truly separated Talia and Carter. They were Bonnie and mother fucking Clyde. They were never apart. Not in life. Not in death. They could not be kept separated. They would find each other. They would find each other and they would be married and then they would eventually have two or three kids and just be completely thrilled out of their minds.
Or at least...that WAS what she wanted. But near death experiences really change your perspective on things, you know? Now, that's not to say Talia didn't want to be married to Carter. She still did. She still wanted a big, grand wedding with him badly. However, she was less hasty now. She would wait as long as she had to for him to come around and ask her to be his wife. She would say yes when he asked, when ever that may be (Little did she know, she'd only have to wait a few more minutes before becoming an engaged woman). A marriage could not be one sided. And besides, it wasn't like they were going to get shot tomorrow (which was a nice change from the old life, if you ask her). They had time to kill.
She smiled when his arm instinctively wrapped around her. A warm, happy feeling ran through her as she leaned over and rested her head on his shoulder, snuggling close to him. She was definitely taking advantage of his new, ever-present willingness to cuddle. This was a change in him she did not mind at all and hoped would not soon fade. This constant cuddling she could easily get used to. She liked being held.
Her smiled widened at his touch and kiss. “Yeah,” he answered. “I’d imagine..” Her dark eyes me this blues and she gave him a smile before leaning in. She stole a kiss from him before she said, "There's no one else I'd rather be out here with. Thanks for coming with me to this bonfire." She truly did appreciate him and everything he did for her. In the past, she had sucked at vocalizing her appreciation for him, but those days were over.
“You want a marshmallow or something? Or I brought gummy bears and starburst... I can roast ‘em for you.”
Oh. That was true love right there. He was such a keeper. Still, she arched her eyebrows. "Roast...gummy bears and starburst?" She asked him. "Hun, you're only supposed to roast, like...hot dogs and marshmallows." I mean, who honestly roasted gummy bears and starburst. Honestly...what the hell? She'd never heard of that before.
Marshmallows were tempting though. She layed her head on his shoulder again. "Marshmallows sound nice," She said softly before she looked up at him and smirked a bit, "Think there's anyone around here with some crackers and chocolate, Clyde? Because, I'm thinkin' we should steal it and make ourselves some s'mores."
No, not exactly the high profile thievery they had once committed...but it was still stealing. Once a bad ass thief, always a bad ass thief.

YOU AND I ARE YOUNG what makes it wrong for us to fall in love? Getting into that car crash and almost killing his one true love had really made a difference in Carter. In fact, he was practically an entirely new person now. One of the main things Talia noticed may have been the cuddling, but there was a lot more to how Carter had changed than just his willingness to cuddle and hold her whenever she felt like it. Clyde, well, he felt like he appreciated his Bonnie a hell of a lot more now. It was one of those situations where you never quite know what you have until it’s gone. Carter knew he couldn’t live without Talia the same night that they broke up. If he had been smart, he would have just went to her that night, right then and there, and apologized. He’d have apologized, they’d have made up, and everything would have been better. None of the rest of that had to have happened. However, it definitely all did, and so Carter would just have to try to look on the bright side of things instead. Like how he appreciated her so much more now. How he finally realized how much she meant to him.
How much she meant to him. God, it had to be a lot. It would take nothing less than Talia for Carter to ever consider marriage. Hell, he was still half-surprised at himself right now. She would be so surprised… There was no way she would be expecting this, especially on such a random night like tonight. He took her out to the bonfire, and they would have a good time with each other, roasting marshmallows and starburst and stealing s’more supplies. It would all just be dandy. But instead, in a matter of a few minutes, a few sentences, he was going to ask her to marry him.
She would have to say yes. She better say yes. Bonnie loved Clyde, she had to say yes. Carter knew she still wanted marriage, even if she didn’t talk about it too often anymore. That didn’t mean that she didn’t still think about it, didn’t still desire it greatly. Now he would be treating her. For once, he would be doing something just for her. Carter hadn’t been so great about that in the past; now, he worried more about her, he took care of her, he did everything for her. She was his world.
Carter smiled gently as he kissed her back. “Of course, baby…” And his smile only widened when she questioned his choice of foods to roast. “Yeah! I know it’s weird, but trust me… Here, I’ll make you one right now.” He unwrapped a strawberry starburst and stuck it onto the poker, sticking the candy directly in the flames for a minute. He watched it carefully, his entire concentration on the square of sugar he was cooking. He turned the candy repeatedly, making sure it didn’t melt and fall into the flames. And after a moment, he took it out, letting it cool and then handing it to her. The crispy outside, the gooey inside… those things were heaven. “Try this and then tell me you still want me to nick s’more stuff for you.” Well, she probably still would. Nothing could really replace s’mores.
As Carter waited for Talia to try the starburst, his expression softened a bit, and he slipped his hand back into his pocket, feeling the velvet box waiting there. God, he really wanted to ask her right now. But he had to figure out how he was going to lead up to this. He should be sophisticated; it should be a perfect moment. He would have to… Carter cleared his throat. Ah shit, now it would be obvious he was up to something. He just couldn’t hold stuff like this in! “Um, Talia…” he started, and suddenly he began getting nervous. He took his hand out of his pocket, wringing the two of them together nervously as he looked down at them. Shit, shit, shit. “I.. have something else for you that I brought, too. Something I-I think you’ll like.” Damn, she better like it.
