Personal Style: Ben keeps his hair short, it’s more manageable that way; he’s all about easy maintenance, you have to be with you’re a single dad. When he’s teaching, he usually throws on a blazer over his button-up shirt and wears slacks. When he’s not enlightening the students of RHS, he’s a jeans and t-shirt kind of guy, his daughter even convinced him into wearing Converse.
Ben prefers to look presentable, but when painting sets and running through blocking, propriety flies out of the window. He has a vast collection of shirts stained with paint, jeans with a few holes, and general clothes that are nearly unraveling. In Ben’s case, the clothes rarely do make the man.
Appearance: Ben is tall, and toned; he’s had to build sets, hoist his daughter up and haul himself from here to there. He’s a good looking gent; light hair and hazel eyes with a slight smirk, which he’s been told is “to die for.” And for the most part, Ben can look in the mirror and like what he sees. He can’t complain; he’s healthy, keeps active, mostly eats right, and tries to find the good in everything.
HOPE AND HORROR
MIXED IN BLOOD
Likes: Musical theatre, his job, walks with the Elizabeth and the dog, coffee, singing, reading, biking, Tarantino films, the smell of laundry just out of the drier, and Italian food.
Dislikes: Car crashes, snow storms, arguments, getting hit by set pieces or scenery, kids using the word “like” far too often, when people read out stage directions (“There’s a reason it’s italicized!”), French toast, touch screen technology, mistreated books, and abuse of any kind.
Dreams: To send Elizabeth to a great college and raise her with love and good morals. And maybe to find a girlfriend, if the far off future that is.
Fears: Losing Elizabeth, not trusting his instincts, normal people finding out about the ROSR.
Habits/Hobbies: Mumbling under his breath, prone to break out in song or dance, passes his hands through his hair when frustrated, and either taps his foot or drums his fingers when idle.
Secret(s): Immense guilt over why his wife died.
Personality: Ben is a good humored guy, he laughs easily and smiles. He loves his job at RHS and does his utmost to inspire his students to get involved. It’s comfortable and enjoyable for him to be at work, doing what he loves. And he is there a lot of the time, after school and on weekends he could be found in the auditorium with his students rehearsing or set building. Elizabeth, his daughter, is usually there to “help out” but it’s really just free babysitting for Ben.
Ben loves his little girl but, after the tragic death of his wife Ben had to step up his game and raise Elizabeth on his own. He felt awful about it, really; even though he wrote death time and time again in his past life, Ben couldn't beat the anger and guilt over his loss this time around. He felt as if everything he did was wrong and nothing felt right. Ben was numb for a good long while, pouring all the love and affection he had into Elizabeth. It was difficult at first, he didn’t know what to do or why she needed him all the time but eventually Ben got the hang of it. He’s still terrified of messing up, or losing her; she’s everything to him. Ben just wants to do right by her, for her sake, and send her off into the world as the best person she could possibly be.
As for his thoughts about Shakespeare's infamy; he knows that for some reason it's a pretty big deal, and as an English student he wondered why people couldn't just let things be. News flash, not everything he wrote as Shakespeare was good! And as a result, he doesn't do much writing anymore. Oddly enough, he does have an affinity for puns, just the really awful ones for some reason: "You know, Van Gogh cut off his left ear, he's all right now."
Ben is a caring and compassionate man; he tries to teach his students tolerance and understanding, and hopes that they can carry those lessons with them. He’s a bit of an idealist, but what do you expect from a man who once wrote, Why then, can one desire too much of a good thing? (from As You Like It) Ben’s intentions are always honorable and true; he never makes a promise he can’t keep, nor does he turn people away due to their actions. He’s always been the forgiving type.

History: Benjamin Thomas Plunkett was born to Patricia and Collin on August 14, 1970. He grew up in a small Connecticut town outside Hartford called New Britain. He had a fairly normal childhood with his younger brother, James. They enjoyed summer vacations, baseball games, and the occasional sibling rivalry. It was only once Ben was in the fifth grade play, that something changed.
He’d always been into theater, Shakespeare in particular, but in that play Ben was to be Thomas Jefferson and re-enact the signing of the Constitution. There was a blank paper on the stage and he was seated at a desk, the narrators droned on and Ben began to write. By the end of the small show, he had re-written the prologue to Romeo and Juliet which he had never read. That struck him as quite odd, but he really thought nothing of it. Events such as these continued to occur throughout the duration of Ben’s schooling. He couldn’t explain it, but he didn’t want to try. He realized that he was different from his family and friends.
Ben has the memory of the day seared into his mind, the day he finally convinced himself that he was William Shakespeare. He was in college, studying theater and English literature and was taking a Shakespearean course. They were discussing Marvolian theory, the question itself: was Christopher Marlowe actually William Shakespeare? Ben thought it ludicrous to entertain such a thought. Clearly, they were two separate men. The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus and Marlowe’s other works shared no similarity with Shakespeare’s. So, he got into an argument with the professor when the old man brought up that the Queen herself may have ordered Marlowe’s assassination due to her favor with Shakespeare. He stormed out after the argument and found himself fuming over the theory for the rest of the week.
But, Ben reasoned, he wouldn’t have cared so adamantly about this theory if he wasn’t somehow connected to it. He could recite and write Shakespeare without any effort, and sometimes found himself using Sonnets as pick-up lines. And that is when Ben decided that his memories of Jolly Olde England were real, as were his recollections of The Globe and neighboring theater houses. At that point, it was better to accept the fact that he was Shakespeare than refute it.
And he tried to live life as normally as he could. He married a wonderful woman and had and lovely daughter; he loved his job teaching at Riverdale High School and had a great friendship with the principal; she had introduced him to the ROSR. Everything was lovely, until it wasn’t. One December night, in the middle of a snow storm, Ben’s wife decided to make a quick jaunt to the grocery store. He had just gotten home and was tired from a long day, he would’ve offered to go instead but he was in the shower when she left. Ben still can’t get over it; if only he had done things differently, she would still be alive. Coming to the scene of the car crash was the worst; the vehicle was an unrecognizable heap of metal, the interior smeared with blood. He was told she died upon impact, that it was quick. For the longest time, Ben couldn’t understand how someone so wonderful and good could be taken like that. But, he set aside his anger and loss, screwed his courage to the sticking place, and raised Elizabeth the best he could and withdrew from the ROSR; he no longer saw the point of it.
