Oliver was not faring well at keeping in touch with his parents. The first couple of weeks of school he'd done fine. There wasn't much to update on, but there were hardly any distractions for the first couple of weeks. After that, things began happening - the clincher was, most of these were things he could not dream in a million years of telling his parents in this life.
Ed Winchester was perfectly fine with this. Cindy had done the same thing, he said, and they were teenagers. It was understandable that they'd want a bit of distance from their parents at this point. Judy, on the other hand, worried nonstop that Oliver was not writing back because he was getting into trouble, or that he was failing, or one of the other myriads of items that a young boy could be keeping from his parents. The truth, reincarnation, fortunately was not one of them.
So when Oliver had finally gotten around to writing them a note in early February informing them of his relationship with Lenita, Judy Winchester pounced upon this golden opportunity that her son had provided her with. Oliver was to bring his girlfriend over for dinner, where Ed and Judy would likely pounce upon poor Lenita and play twenty questions with her. And Oliver, of course, but it wasn't so much that that he was worried about. Despite being anything but a normal teenager, he still did face the frustrations of a normal teenager from time to time. The last thing he wanted was for Ed and Judy Winchester to embarrass him in front of his girlfriend. Finally, a date was set, and plans were made.
Oliver spent the day with Lenita in the kite fields, doing what one would expect in such an area - flying kites. He was delighted that she'd taken such an interest in flying, but then, he surmised, it was an interest of hers in the first place - It was she who suggested they go on that hang gliding trip, after all, not him. Perhaps it was no small coincidence, then, that they ended up together. After the outing at the kite fields, Oliver and Lenita started the walk to Middletown to the Winchester home...and to his parents. It was times like these he wished he had a car - Well, no, it wasn't so much that as a wish that he was old enough to have a license! It was another unfair thing that he had to deal with as a result of reincarnation. He had plenty of years of experience driving. He could drive perfectly fine, albeit with a tendency to go over the speed limit. Best part was, he did not have an old back injury in this life that would require him to add special shock absorbers to the car to alleviate pain. Of course, that didn't mean that he would not add shock absorbers, but he did not need them.
"Sorry...maybe we should have taken the bus." Oliver muttered somewhat ashamedly. At the very least, they could have had something over their heads in the journey, and heat - sweet glorious heat - rather than walking in the cold. The journey was most of the way over, though, and thus it did little good to call for a taxi or hop on the bus when they only had a few blocks more to travel.
As they walked, Oliver's mind was not so much on the cold, but rather on the impending situation. Ed and Judy Winchester were about to meet Lenita. His parents. Yet they still did not feel quite like his parents. He'd acknowledged them for what they were, yes. He acknowledged that Judy Winchester had given birth to him, and that Ed Winchester had been there to witness the event. He acknowledged that they cared for him, loved him, and treated him like one of their own - because he was, in fact, one of their own. This time away from the Winchesters at school did nothing to ease these awkward feelings around his parents, and thus he was not looking forward to this visit at all. Even if he did have an exceptionally good rapport with the Winchesters before leaving to board at the school, it would certainly suffer now. There was so much that he could not tell his parents! He could not tell his parents why his and Cindy's bond had a renewed strength. The happiest moment in the past several months, meeting his past brother again, he could not even discuss with his parents because, as far as they were concerned, he had no siblings other than Cindy. He was just a kid with a crazy imagination and a high dose of mechanical talent. He could never tell them that he was Orville Wright, and now that he was in RSOR, that part of him was allowed to roam free and unhampered by trying to pretend that he was just an average fourteen year old.
Maybe, then, it was for the best that Lenita was coming over? At least he could share some part of his life with them. So many mixed feelings that Oliver just didn't know what to do with!
"Should be almost there now. I'll warn you ahead of time, J-my mom likes to ask a bunch of questions. I figure we'll play twenty questions with her, say hello to Ed, and then head to my room while dinner's being prepared." Oliver explained to Lenita as the couple turned the block to his parents' home. Not his home, as far as he was concerned. He somehow doubted that Cindy considered it to be her home either. In fact, strange as it was, Riverdale was the closest thing he'd discovered to something feeling like home in this entire lifetime.
Oliver finally stopped in front of a modest two story home. He smiled nervously at Lenita, leaning forward slowly to give her a peck on the lips. When he pulled away, he flashed her another smile and reached out to hold her hand with his right hand. He did not want his left hand, still scarred up from his sulfuric acid burns, to show. He did not want to deal with the questions. He'd suffered far worse, and he didn't need Judy to freak out over it. There was one thing that he did want to show his parents, though - Lenita was his, and he cared deeply for her. He wanted them to approve. If they couldn't approve of much else about his true self, they could at least approve of that.
"You ready?" He looked her in the eye, his eyes lighting up as he did so. Looking at Lenita reminded him of one thing - Even if nothing else went right about tonight, he would be spending it with Lenita. And this gave him faith that with her there, he could handle this.
